MOTORBIKE SECTION

Welcome to the Motorbike section of our website. The Institute of Advanced Motorists is the leading Advanced Riding Organisation, dedicated to raising riding standards. As a qualified biker you will probably have some questions about graduating to Advanced Motorcycling, we will try to answer some here.

THE PROGRAMME

Our Advanced motorcycling package is called Skill for Life and includes your personal copy of the IAM advanced riding manual, membership of our group which will provide you with a course in theory and on-road guidance (observed runs) and a pre-test as well as a warm welcome to our group, group meetings, social events and activities. Your IAM motorcycle test and your first year’s membership of the IAM.

With the right preparation, advanced motorcycling is not as difficult as you might suppose. But as with any form of further education and skills training, its up to the individual to get the most out of the programme

We operate two methods of preparing you for your test, both involve having your riding observed by one of our trained observers with a full de-brief afterwards.

 1) Group Observing, which takes place every other Saturday morning, from Wylie & Holland’s motorcycle dealership in Wellington.
All associates and observers turn up en masse. Runs are conducted (numbers permitting) on a one to one basis. Runs start at 10am and last approximately two hours including a de-brief.

2) If you cannot make Saturdays you can at your request be allocated an observer who will take you for observed runs at a mutually convenient time i.e. evenings/weekends. There may be one living near to you.

All we ask is you commit to attending regularly once you start.

Our observers and pre-testers give their time free of charge, however, as they use their own motorcycles they do ask for part re-imbursement of running costs at £5 per session.

How much does Skills for life cost?  Just £85 or £75 if you are under 25

RESULTS

Advanced Motorcyclists are less likely to be involved in collisions, are less likely to incur penalty points for bad riding and after passing their test, benefit from reduced insurance costs.
Advanced Motorcycling is not about racetrack riding, it’s about skill, control and forward thinking. It’s about staying alive and enjoying your motorcycling.

WHAT NEXT

Complete a Skill’s For Life enrolment form and return it to our group. To receive a form, contact Rob Purser, our membership secretary, on 01952 406735 or join online at iam.org.uk.

You will receive guidance from our group and when you are ready you will measure your improvement in riding skills by taking the IAM advanced motorcycling test.

You use your own bike and the test will be conducted by an IAM appointed examiner who holds a police advanced motorcycling certificate. It last about ninety minutes and will be conducted on all types of roads.

If you are successful you will receive a pass certificate and be proposed for IAM membership.

There is no age limit. The only requirement is that you have held a full UK or EU licence for at least three months and at the time of taking your test you do not have more than eight penalty points on your licence.
