So is it OK if we start by dispelling a few old "stereotypes" that still seems to exist in some quarters?
You see there are still those who think that IAM members are bearded, "tut tutting" finger wagging old codgers who pass unfavorable comments every time they see a bike with a race can or a modified car? WRONG!
At Telford & Wrekin Advanced Motorists and Motorcyclists (TWAMM), we do keep a few tame beardy types for their wisdom and knowledge, but within our membership there are people from all walks of life and age groups, an increasing number of whom are women.
Yes of course we have "Touring Riders" and "Classic Car enthusiasts" within our ranks, and we also have plenty of members who own more "sports" orientated machines and (shock, horror!) some IAM members even modify their cars…and ALL are equally welcomed!!
TWAMM are one of many IAM groups around the UK. We aim to continually improve our skills and socialise with similarly minded people.
In simple terms, we"re just a bunch of (mostly!) normal people that enjoy driving and biking to the full.
In short, we don"t care what you own, but we do care how you use it!
Training and safety of all road users is our first priority, but we also hold regular evening and weekend motorcycle social ride-outs, visit places and events you might not otherwise get to, hold BBQs and other social events, and plan to have weekend"s away for 2011…and much more!
The process of becoming an Advanced Rider or Driver often seems either daunting, or to some, and as mentioned earlier, the image of IAM members being either grey haired pipe smokers, or an experienced elite with no time for anyone except themselves could not be further from the truth.
Whether you chose to join with us, or train elsewhere, you must agree that our congested roads are becoming an increasingly dangerous place to be, so don"t you owe it to yourself (and your family) to "raise your game" to ensue that you possess the skills and confidence to rise above the pack?
The alternative is to ignore the sad statistics and do nothing, as opposed to taking action towards ensuring that you do not become one of them!
For the motorcyclists amongst us, we represent just 2.6% of the UK road using population… but around 20% of those Killed or Seriously Injured (KSI) and are 50 times more likely to become a casualty than a car driver.
For those who prefer to travel on four (or more wheels), more than 75% of the above KSI incidents involve other vehicles and two thirds of those incidents were caused by a right of way violation on the part of the driver of the other vehicle.
